Research:
Agency of Matter – Sculpting with Organic Waste
[taide hajoamisen hetkessä]
2024 > ongoing

This research-based project explores biodegradable materials, sculpting practices and the potential of transforming organic food waste into sculptures. This work is part of an ongoing exploration of regenerative artistic practices that question how do objects coexist in this world and could they benefit other-than-humans / ecosystems around us. Does an object / matter have agency?

@jennitalvikki
Jenni is a multidisciplinary artist with a diverse background in film, photography, painting, ceramics, glass and biomaterials. Currently, she is doing her master studies in Visual Cultures, Curating, and Contemporary Art (VICCA) at Aalto University and her focus is on artistic research, exploring the intersections of painting, sculpting and biomaterials [organic waste].

Through her art, she explores connection and disconnectedness – between the self, others, other species, and places. Strong recurring themes also include ecology, embodiment, decay, fragmentation, and the mind’s liminal experiences and the chaos where all these entangle together. Her process is rooted in experimentation, and attentive listening, where the subconscious plays an essential role.

In 2014, she co-founded Veli Studio – a creative studio and a production company. Over the years, she worked in film as a director, art director, and cinematographer on TV series, art films, documentaries, photography, print [and commercials]. Her work earned her and her team several accolades, including Junior of the Year at Vuoden Huiput, a Gold Award at ADCE*, and three Silver Awards at Vuoden Huiput. She has also been honored to serve on juries for the Emma Gaala, Voitto, and Vuoden Huiput.

Taikauskoa, kauhukuvia vai karmaa,
Oil and acrylic on canvas
110 x 70 cm
2024

In painting, I get fascinated by organic forms, nature, human body and fragmented aestethics. Often I draw inspiration from texts and poems I have previously written.

Taikauskoa vai karmaa, [ superstition or karma, ] is an artwork that has been derived from a fragmented text I wrote in 2022.
